The Ice Is Cracked

Sun sets and the shadows lengthen
and I don’t know if we can stay ahead.
All around us the snow banks crumble;
it’s a miracle we’re not dead.
“Dead!” “Dead!” it’s all I can think of,
the more I love the more I fear.
I’m clutching so gracelessly
at everything that I hold dear.
I’m learning to let go
Take deep breaths
and I’ll fall like snow
into a sleep like I’ve never known.
The ice is cracked from the start,
we’ve got to jump the floes.
Inexorably we’re pulled apart,
but how it ends, everyone knows.
“Disaster!” “Disaster!” it’s all I can think of,
the more I love the more I fear.
I’m clutching so gracelessly
at everything that I hold dear.
